The project website describes step by step how to install the MuPiBox on a memory card: Simple installation. This chapter begins when the card is in the box.
Switching on
- Connect power or the battery. The box starts up and shows a boot screen on the display.
- After a minute or two the start page with the categories appears (The start page).
The boot screen is one of 15 scenes or the card, or a random one at every start. You choose it under Settings › Appearance › Boot and maintenance screens. The same picture appears during updates, when a new Wi-Fi is set up and when the box shuts down, if you like in a maintenance screen of its own.
Getting the box onto Wi-Fi
The box needs a Wi-Fi so that you can set it up from a phone or PC and so that Spotify, podcasts and radio work. If it does not know a network yet, set one up on the display:
- Open the settings on the display (Settings on the display).
- Tap the Network settings tile. If the box is connected by cable right now, choose WiFi at the top.
- In the list, tap Connect next to your network and enter the password. A hidden network you enter yourself with Add network.
The box stays in the current network and only switches when the new one is reachable. More about this, also about a fixed IP address and the cable connection: Wi-Fi and LAN.
Finding the box's address
The box announces itself on the network as mupibox.local. If that does not work for you, you need its IP address. You find it
- on the network page on the display,
- in the app under Settings › Network › Wi-Fi,
- in your router's device list.
The box's name
Under Settings › System › About the box you give the box a name (14 characters at most). It appears on the boot screen and on the app's start page. Leave it empty and it is called “MuPiBox”. The box's name on the network (the hostname) is a different thing and is found under Settings › System › Experts.
