Design – theme, status bar, start image and background

Choose a theme, show or hide the status bar icons, build your own theme, design the start image and set your own background.

Under Box → Customizing you decide how the kids' interface looks. All changes appear on the box after a few seconds, without a restart.

Theme

A theme sets colours, font, corner rounding, background decoration and the shape of the status bar. The preview below shows the selected theme. 24 themes are included, among them Modern Dark, Pulse, Commodore Retro (8-bit), Block World, MuPi Kids, Pirate Cove (storybook), Space Explorer, Magic, Dino Jungle, Neon Arcade, Neon Grid, LCARS, Dreamy Pastel, Kawaii Pop, Fairy Garden, Moonwalk, Web Hero, Night Guardian, Football, Classic, Ocean Explorer, Retro Radio and Rainbow.

The themes also differ in their status bar:

Status bar icons

Volume, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, battery and clock can be hidden one by one. By default all are shown. The change is saved immediately.

  • A hidden icon can no longer be tapped either – the short tap (announcement) and the long press (quick page) are gone for it.
  • Bluetooth only appears with Bluetooth switched on, the battery only with a MuPiHAT and a detected battery.

Custom theme

"Custom theme" lets you build your own design. An existing theme is the starting point ("Use an existing theme as template"). Special motifs and decorations of the original themes are not copied.

The box does not check contrast automatically – make sure text stays readable, especially on light backgrounds.

Splash screen (start image)

The image shown when the box starts:

  • Theme splash: matching the selected theme (new themes use the default image until they get their own).
  • Own image: JPEG or PNG up to 8 MB, ideally 800×480 (5:3).
  • Design a splash: pick a background and move up to three texts directly in the preview.

The start image appears as soon as the graphics driver is ready and stays until the kids' interface takes over.

Application background

Instead of the theme background, a motif from the MuPiBox library or your own image (JPEG/PNG up to 8 MB, cropped to 5:3) can sit behind the whole kids' interface. Image adjustment darkens the image (negative values) or brightens it (positive values) so that text stays readable.
