MuPiBox history and origins

How TonUINO, Phoniebox with a display, and Sonos-Kids-Controller contributed to MuPiBox Classic from 2022 and to MuPiBox NG.

This record was written on 12 October 2026 and distinguishes public evidence from the project contributors' retrospective account.

Earlier influences: TonUINO and Phoniebox

TonUINO (an RFID- and button-controlled DIY audio player) and Phoniebox / RPi-Jukebox-RFID (Raspberry Pi, RFID, local media, web radio and a browser interface) were early sources of inspiration and practical experience.

According to the developers' retrospective account, a display was added to a Phoniebox as part of early experiments. These experiments with a visual interface helped shape the idea of a dedicated, child-friendly touch-controlled music player. No contemporary photos or commits documenting the precise date of that modification are currently linked here.

2022: MuPiBox Classic is built

MuPiBox Classic was developed from 2022 on the basis of Thyraz's Sonos-Kids-Controller, a pre-existing touchscreen music controller for children. Raspberry Pi/DietPi, hardware integration, audio output and additional media features were developed further for MuPiBox Classic.

The Classic repository credits the upstream controller under “Based on”. Its publicly visible history includes an initial commit dated 9 February 2022.

MuPiBox NG

MuPiBox NG continues the concept through a new Go backend and Qt/QML interface. Prior inspiration should not be confused with copying source code: mentioning Phoniebox and TonUINO does not establish that their code is part of MuPiBox.

Sources and limitations

Publishing this history today does not retroactively establish that a particular feature was publicly disclosed before patent filings in 2019 or 2020; contemporary dated evidence would be necessary.
