Display & touch

Choose the right display profile, set resolution and rotation and know what official, Waveshare and HDMI displays can do when dimming and in standby.

Under Hardware → Display & touch you tell the box which display is connected. MuPiBox separates the panel driver (display profile) from the picture mode (resolution, rotation, managed by DietPi).

Display profile

ProfileFor
Automatic / defaultHDMI and automatically detected displays, e.g. the official Raspberry Pi touch display 7″ (1st generation)
Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 (5″, 7″, 10″)the new generation of official displays
Waveshare DSI 4.3″ / 5″ (800×480)the small Waveshare DSI displays
Waveshare DSI 7″, 8″, 8.8″, 9″, 10.1″, 12.3″larger Waveshare DSI displays, some with a "4 lane" variant
  • A profile sets the matching device tree overlay in config.txt. The change takes effect after a restart.
  • DSI port: the Pi 5 and compute modules have two DSI ports; choose the right one here.
  • If the box finds an older MuPiBox display configuration, the profile takes it over when saving. A foreign DSI configuration is not overwritten.

Detected display outputs

The list comes straight from the graphics driver (KMS/DRM). Here you set resolution, rotation and whether an output is active. DietPi's tool dietpi-display does this. If it is missing, profile management still works; mode and rotation then have to be set by hand.

Brightness, dimming and standby

How well the backlight can be controlled depends on the display:

DisplayBrightnessFully dark in standby
Official touch display 7″ (1st gen.)steplessyes
Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2via softwareprobably yes (not yet tested on a MuPiBox)
Waveshare 5″ DSIsteplessolder revisions yes; newer ones stay visible at the lowest level
HDMI displaysusually not via softwareno – the box shows a black picture, the backlight stays on

On Waveshare displays the lowest brightness is intentionally visible from the factory. According to Waveshare it only goes fully off with a hardware mod (a 100 kΩ resistor is replaced with 68 kΩ) – at your own risk. More about standby under Display & power.

Touch

DSI displays bring touch over the ribbon cable. HDMI displays with USB touch work without any setting. If touch is offset or does not react, usually the display profile is wrong or the rotation does not match the touch.
